One small piece of furniture I find myself using over and over again is an accent stool. These little multitaskers are surprisingly versatile. I’ve moved my stools all over our house and used them in so many different ways that I think every home could use several!

The Stool I’ve Had for Years

I’ve had my dip dyed stools for over 12 years (you can see them way back in my 2014 Christmas house tour here!).

I have two of the larger versions, and I’ve used them everywhere from the bathroom to the bedroom to the living room. Right now they are serving as small nightstands next to our beds in the Snug. The simple teak design works with so many different styles, and because it’s small, it’s easy to move around whenever I need a little extra surface or seating.

My daughter Courtney has the same one and uses it as a small end table between two armchairs.

I used my others so much that I recently decided to buy a similar dip dyed stool on Amazon, too (above on the right). I don’t love it quite as much as my original, but it’s still a nice option if you’re looking for something similar. I will say the price difference isn’t much different when the S&L version is on sale (which it is at the time of me writing this–sale ends today!), so I’d definitely keep an eye out for a sale to compare prices.

The S&L dip dyed stool style comes in both small and large sizes, and they also make a natural wood version without the painted legs. There’s even an oval version if you want a different shape, too.

I Love a Stool That Can Do More Than One Job

The other stool I have and love is a little teak step stool. I’m currently using it as a small nightstand in our small guest room (of course it’s low, but it works for our guests as a perch for a little lamp, a book, phone, or a glass of water.

My daughter has the same one (I think hers is a newer version) and uses it as a step stool for her toddler.

I also have had this oval stool from Target for years, which is another great option.

The best part about a stool is that you really can’t get it wrong. You can start with one, use it in one room for a while, and eventually you’ll probably find yourself carrying it somewhere else because you suddenly need it there.

A few other ways to use accent stools around your home…

In the Bathroom

Put one next to a freestanding tub to hold a stack of towels, a candle, a small plant, or even a battery-operated lamp. It adds a little warmth and texture without taking up much space.

Teak is especially nice in places like bathrooms because it naturally handles moisture well.

Next to the Sofa

A little stool is also great beside a sofa or chair.

Use it as a spot for a stack of books, a small lamp, or a drink. And when you have guests, you can pull it over and use it as an extra seat.

As a Plant Stand

Putting a plant on a stool instantly gives it a little more height and makes the plant feel more intentional in the room.

I especially like this trick in corners where a plant sitting directly on the floor feels a little lost.

And Don’t Forget Garden Stools & Ottomans

Garden stools or sturdy small ottomans can also serve a similar purpose!
