In today’s post, you’ll find new photos of my home and how I’ve styled it this week, along with five home decorating ideas to add warmth, personality, and charm to the spaces where you gather.

You’ll also find:

  • A pretty collage
  • A simple decorating tip for a practical and pretty centerpiece
  • Inspiration for setting a relaxed, welcoming table with a mix of dishes and linens
  • Some of the classic pieces we’ve collected from Ballard Designs over the years!

Whether it’s a casual get-together, Sunday supper, a special occasion, or a holiday meal, our dining room and kitchen are where so many family memories are made.

Making our home feel warm and inviting is something I learned from my mom. She’s always taken such care to make every gathering feel special, creating memories of home that stay with us long after the occasion has passed.

I’ve come to appreciate that a welcoming home isn’t just about how a room looks, but how it feels to be there and the experiences we share.

Chandelier

Here are four ways we’ve added warmth and character to our own gathering spaces over the years:

1. Swap lighting to add warmth and personality

When we were planning and waiting for the renovation of our kitchen and dining nook, one of the first things I wanted to order was our dining light.

Swapping out builder-grade lighting that lacks personality (or even just changing lampshades!) is something I’ve done in every home we’ve ever lived in.

Lighting is one of those details that can instantly add warmth and character to a space. It’s also an opportunity to express your own style!

The lighting over a dining table becomes a memorable focal point, too. I always recommend putting overhead lighting on a dimmer whenever possible so you can create just the right mood for everyday meals or special gatherings.

2. Mix and match chairs for a cozy, collected look

The next pieces I ordered for our dining room after the renovation were two of these Parsons chairs from Ballard Designs (along with two different sets of slipcovers, which I still have and love!). These are the black ticking stripe slipcovers.

We’re still using our secondhand dining table, but it’s the combination of wood tones, textures, and slipcovered chairs that gives our dining nook the cozy, collected-over-time feeling I love.

The mix of chairs adds character and continues to serve our family well. And since nothing has to match perfectly, we can easily add or swap chairs and slipcovers whenever we want a little change!

Everything I’ve ordered from Ballard Designs over the years effortlessly mixes with the pieces we’ve already collected and loved in our home.

Counter Stools // Cushions

3. Add a charming stool or two to make room for everyone

I’m a big fan of stools you can move around or pull up to a conversation.

We waited years to find just the right counter stools for our kitchen, but these charming ones were worth the wait!

One will stay in our little “stool niche,” while the other will sit against the wall, adding character to the room even when it isn’t in use.

Both can easily be pulled up to the counter as a little perch for someone who wants to keep the cook company, help prepare a holiday meal, or simply enjoy being part of the conversation.

They can even be brought into another area of the home when we need an extra seat.

I’ve always felt that having a few extra stools sends a welcoming message: there’s always room for one more!

To make ours even comfier, we added cute tie-on cushions.

They actually match the black ticking stripe slipcovers I bought years ago, so even though everything is mix and match, it somehow looks like we planned it all along!

4. Choose serving pieces that are both pretty and practical

One thing I love about gathering around a table is finding little ways to make the experience feel special, even when the occasion is simple.

That includes centerpieces!

For serving a group, I think a Lazy Susan in the center of a dining table (or even on a buffet for appetizers or desserts!) is such a fun and practical idea.

This one is gorgeous and glides so smoothly.

I love when serving pieces are not only functional, but become part of the experience, too. A centerpiece doesn’t have to be a fancy bouquet that’s just there to look pretty!

This week I styled our table with practical centerpiece for serving our salad: a beautiful mango wood bowl, a vintage pitcher for dressing, and these charming handmade “Partridge in a Pear” salt and pepper shakers.

We could easily add in snacks, bread or other things we want to serve.

It’s so handy to spin the Lazy Susan around so everyone can reach what they need, and it makes sharing food around the table a little more fun, too.

Wouldn’t this sweet pair also make a darling gift for a wedding or housewarming? I love them so much.
They are pretty and practical!

5. Set a Relaxed, Welcoming Table

Mixing and matching dishes, placemats, and napkins creates a casual, collected feeling that puts everyone at ease.

These quilted placemats are so soft, and they layer beautifully with our table and dishes. I also have the neutral linen napkins, which go with everything in every season.

For an easy seasonal touch, you don’t even need a trip to the florist. Just pick up something pretty from the produce aisle or farmers market!

Pears, pumpkins, apples … they all look beautiful on a table, and you can eat them, too!

A home made for gathering, season after season

I think that’s the beauty of creating a warm and inviting home. It’s not just about choosing pretty things to look at, but finding pieces that make a room more comfortable, welcoming, and enjoyable to use.

Over time, the furnishings we collect become part of the backdrop for so many of our family’s everyday memories and traditions.

Just as my mom taught me, it doesn’t take a fancy or elaborate occasion to create lasting memories.

Sometimes the simplest things—a cozy place to sit, a welcoming table, familiar dishes, and the people we love gathered around—are what we’ll treasure most.

And those are the moments worth making room for, season after season.
