I’m often asked how we keep our house clean. Believe me, our house isn’t always as spic and span as I’d like (no paid housekeeper here), but we do have some simple tricks and systems that work for us (and make our home feel clean, even with pups and visiting toddlers).
Today I’ll share 7 ways we keep our home clean (enough)!
This post is free on the blog for everyone but it will be added to our HomeBody membership 10 Minute Sanctuary Gallery, too so it’s easier for HomeBodies to find later! The HomeBody House is a quiet (social media and ad free), helpful and inspiring place for HomeBodies (like me!) who want to create more peace in their sanctuaries.
One: The Steps

We sweep our stairs regularly (we have this broom and dust pan we love for quick sweeps). Keeping the steps swept makes the whole house feel cleaner. It really doesn’t take much time at all, just a few minutes. We only sweep them a couple of times a week.
Two: The Furniture

Here’s my secret to keeping furniture and bench seats clean, even with pets and toddlers. Washable tablecloths, quilts or blankets on everything. It’s much easier to toss them in the wash a couple of times a month or as needed than it is to constantly be cleaning furniture.
Then we aren’t stressing out when the dogs make a beeline to the furniture after coming in from the rain! The key to this working for me is to buy CUTE BLANKETS AND QUILTS intentionally for this purpose that coordinate with our home. TIP: don’t cover your furniture with blankets you don’t like or you won’t like the way your home looks.
A few blankets we have and love for tossing over furniture:
- These reversible blankets (I have the cross pattern ones in both blue and gray, and this reversible blue floral one too)
- These plaid cotton blankets (on sale right now, I have the ivory and the navy)
- These white coverlets for covering our daybeds
- This buffalo check tassel tablecloth (seen on our bench above)
Three: The Toddler Messes

We love having babies and pups around, so they are always our priority over a clean house. But you can have both with a few little tricks. If one of our little grand babes is having a messy meal or doing a little art project with us at our house, no problem.
We have these handy little baby tarps that cover the bench, and even can hang down to protect the cabinets below, the floor and rug. :) Easy to whisk that away to machine wash and the rest of the area is still clean, like magic!
Four: The Floors

Keeping the floors clean is one of the best ways to keep your house feeling clean.
With pets and daily life, we make good use of our robot vacuum on the main floor. It works on the rugs and floors and even navigates around all the furniture!
I use this other vacuum upstairs because it’s easy to stash, super lightweight and works so well to pick up all the fluff, hair, whatever stuff ends up on the floor.

Five: The Spills and Accidents on Fabrics and Rugs
When spills or accidents happen, we use this portable cleaner that works for our fabrics and rugs. We LOVE IT!
Washable rugs like this one also make cleaning easier.

Six: The Dust
People often ask how we keep up with dust.
Here are two of my dusting secrets:
Use this for quick dusting of surfaces. It works almost everywhere (including light fixtures and around stair railings!).
By seasonally refreshing our decor and shelving, things are tidied, dusted and polished up regularly, too.

Seven: The General House Cleaning
For general cleaning, here are a few more things that help us keep the house clean:
These window cleaning cloths make it easier to keep up with all the pet noses on our windows and splashes on mirrors.
We keep various scrub brushes and old towels handy by the kitchen sink for quick daily cleaning (this for cups, this one or this for dishes).
We have this monthly subscription for all of our favorite toxin-free household and wellness products, to keep our home truly “clean” for our family.
