Cottage Style Charm

I‘ve always felt at home with cottage style. There are many things I like about cottages. Typically, they are on the smaller more modest side (I just love small not-fancy houses). They can feel so homey and collected. They have unique charm and personality.

Cottages don’t have to have one particular “look” so you aren’t limited to using elements that aren’t “you.” You can put together pieces you love and incorporate favorite architectural elements to make your own fresh cottage style. Even if your home doesn’t have any particular style direction, you can add cottage charm.

I was pleased to stumble upon a number of cottage inspiration photos recently from House and Home magazine. I think they get me. What do you think? I’d say I would feel totally at home with any of these spaces. Click through the links to find even more images!

Do you love cottage style, too?

Loved seeing the vintage and antique items “in the mix:” old dough bowl, framed botanical specimens, lovely old Persian rug, antique stoneware jug, etc.

Such beautiful rooms! I am especially smitten with the texture and warmth in the third photo. Wow. I am not always sure if I can tell the difference between cottage, country, and farmhouse. I think farmhouse is more utilitarian than the other two styles while cottage is more eclectic. I would love to see a post that defines each of these styles. Thanks for the inspiration!

I agree Kim. There is a lot of similarity between those 3 styles and let’s also add beach house to the group. They seem to share the theme of a lot of white and wood floors with area rugs. I tend to see the sliding doors in more of the farm style home, but do see how they would be a real space saver in a small cottage home. Also, to me, a cottage style home wouldn’t be able to fit 10 chairs around the dining room table. A post defining your styles would be a great read. Thank you for this lovely blog post.

Remember when House and Home magazine was Canadian House and Home? That red dining room was in Canadian designer Sarah Richardson’s family’s farmhouse (the wallpaper was actually fabric.) Anyway, I, too, am a fan of the small + not-fancy house. Currently, I am on the hunt for an onion globe lantern for our front porch + hope to copy those X-motif doors for our garden shed. TY for posting!

These are so charming and lovely!! It’s this “collected over time” feeling; all the unexpected nooks and small spaces that I love so much. This style speaks to me like no other — thank you for all the wonderful inspiration. What a fun way to enjoy my coffee this morning. :)

The wallpaper in the 2014 IKEA kitchen makeover. 😍I love everything about that kitchen.

Love cottage style and would have no problem living in a less than 1,000 sq ft home. #emptynesters #lessismore
