It’s been awhile since I’ve talked about how to hang plates on the wall. Since I get this question often (and I keep hanging more plates!) I thought I would share an update!

I’ve tried various methods over the many decades I’ve been hanging plates on our walls, but the best way I’ve found to hang most plates and bowls are with these plate hangers, which I hang on these nails.
The plate hangers come in multiple sizes so you can check the weight of what you’re hanging and choose a bigger or smaller size that’s right for you!
They are easy to apply and haven’t failed me yet! It’s important that you apply them according to directions and let the glue dry over night to make sure it’s secure.
I keep these picture hangers on hand to hang all of our art and the smaller ones are perfect for plates— plus they look so much prettier than ugly hooks or nails! Plus if you have plaster walls these are gentler on them.

Some of the reasons I like these hangers (besides how well they hold) are because they are mostly invisible and don’t damage the plates or the walls. I used to use wire plate hangers but they would make the plate stick out from the wall, the metal would often scratch the wall, the wire clamps showed around the perimeter and it would be easy to break a plate trying to make them fit.
The way I apply these plate hangers, you can’t see them at all from the front.
To make sure the plate or bowl lays flat on the wall, I apply the hanger on the disc like this below:

I’ve always found plates on a wall so charming—like little works of art! They’re one of my favorite ways to decorate affordably, especially since you can often find beautiful ones at thrift stores or secondhand shops.
Try mixing a few into a gallery wall to break up all the rectangles, or even hang just one special plate or bowl to add interest. You can go all-in with a whole wall of mismatched pieces, or use a set of inherited china you don’t use at the table. It’s such a lovely way to use what you have and turn it into something personal and pretty.
Have you tried hanging plates on the wall?

I just moved again, and I have 4 plates for many years that I usually hang in a wire rack, but I like the look of the plates right on the wall. I’m going to try these stick on plate holders; never seen anything like this. Also, I love your kitchen set up with the banquette style loveseat bench, etc. I would love to do this too! Thanks.
Thank you and congrats on a new home! It’s always overwhelming to move but also fun to be able to hang up the plates to make it feel like home and dream of new ideas too.
I love the Banquette set up as well .. I bought a single story new build in a 55+ and it’s beautiful here (Near Temecula, CA). Do you have any great ideas on how to select a Banquette idea for dining. I have an all white kitchen with a large island and the space off the kitchen is next to a beautiful window. Space takes creativity as I’ve downsized considerably. Would love your thoughts
This is so WILD – I LITERALLY JUST HUNG some platters on a wall!!! 🤣 They are beautiful platters that were actually hand-painted by a friend so they are one-of-a-kind. I’m so glad I’m finally displaying them.
I used the wire hangers, as I did not have confidence in the disc version but with your endorsement I will try the discs in the future.
Also, I got my wire hangers at Hobby Lobby who also sold the disc type and I could have sworn HL’s price for the discs was lower than your link to Amazon showed, FWIW.
Any future post on recommendations on how to arrange items hung on the wall, be they plates or framed artwork – would be fabulous!!
Wow, that is crazy! We are on the same wavelength. I understand the fear, I think if you follow the directions carefully it’ll be ok — but there’s always a risk so if you’d be devastated to lose a plate or if it’s really heavy maybe displaying it on a shelf would be even safer. Thank you for the suggestion and ideas to share in future content!
I have successfully used the adhesive discs for many years. I will warn, however, that after a long period of time the glue may deteriorate as I had a couple of plates come unglued after about 5 years. I do love them and continue to use…I just check them periodically and don’t use on my valuable majolica.
Oh good to know. Yikes! I don’t use anything I’d be crushed to lose, that’s a good tip. I also have thought about using two on bigger pieces, as a safeguard.
What kind of glue did you use?
It is prepasted with adhesive, you just clean the plate and dry it, then get a little water on your fingers or a brush to activate it! Once it’s a little tacky you can press it firmly on the plate. It works great!
Have you ever tried to remove the stick on plate hangers?
Yes, super easy! You just soak them and they come right off!
Thank you so much- now on a hunt for a few beautiful plates! Love them on the wall!
You’re welcome!
