20 Little Things to Treasure in Autumn

“It was one of those perfect English autumnal days
which occur more frequently in memory than in life…”

Author P.D. James

Oh, may it not be so!

Autumn gives us every opportunity to live an authentic life. Yet how easy it is to miss the little things in the pursuit of a “perfect” life! An authentic life is made up of recognizing beautiful moments in an imperfect world. We must discipline ourselves to linger even for a moment on those things so they will become emblazoned in our memory like a snapshot in a tattered scrapbook.

20 Little Things To Treasure in Autumn

  1. Quiet dinners by the fire
  2. Reading mystery novels in darkened rooms
  3. Flannel sheets at the end of a long day
  4. Candles Flickering
  5. Smelling cinnamon, oranges & cloves
  6. Pumpkins
  7. Roasts, Potatoes & Carrots
  8. Fluffy feather beds on a cold night
  9. Watching movies snuggled in soft blankets
  10. Cozy socks
  11. Pie in the oven
  12. Warm crackling wood stoves
  13. Squash with buttered brown sugar
  14. Chili and corn bread smothered in honey
  15. Wind blowing through leaves
  16. Glow of lamps through windows
  17. Laughter filling a room
  18. Scrabble and popcorn
  19. Caramel apples
  20. Family

I recently found your website and can’t tell you what a lifesaver it has been for me. Not only have you put a name to what I’ve been searching for this past year (Authentic Living) but I found you at a time when I most need you !

I’m moving into a new home next week and find my movers bringing my mid-century furniture which was chosen for my last home (an “Eichler) to my one-year old new California “Tuscan” or “New Traditional” flavored home. Help!

BTW, I couldn’t help but blog and link to you on my own website: Go-Go Mommy. I heart “The Inspired Room”!

These pictures are beautiful and sooo inspiring! I found you through Christian Women Online and was surprised to see you are in Portland. I’m in L.O. Hi, neighbor! I loved your ideas for organizing and setting aside the first day of the month as a seasonal transition day. Years ago I taught elementary school. In all the years I dreamed of being a teacher, I looked forward to decorating the bulletin boards with seasonal themes. Then, the days in the classroom ended up being so jam-packed with activity I could hardly keep up with just changing the students’ work on display. Unfortunately, as a stay-at-home mom, I haven’t been much more successful with the decorating thing. I look forward to visiting your site often in the future!

Beautiful post. Fall is my favorite season, and I truly felt happy when reading your words. The authentic moments of truly cherishing life and thanking God for all of the many blessings in this world…that is what it is all about.

Love the idea of the 20 things…thanks for sharing the idea so that I could slow down and be thankful and enjoy this time of year and get to see what others are thankful for too! Connie

I love this idea. I’m a summer baby and it’s always hard to say goodbye. This is a great way to stay present to all the wonderful things in each season.

I am ready to move in! I was a bit down today, feeling nostalgic for autumns when my kids were little. Your list brightened me right up. I”m ready to head into the chilly season head first! Thanks, Pam

Yep, pretty perfect. I even had the squash tonite – baked with brown sugar and butter. Mmmmmm.

I love your list. Pretty much everything you listed is right on with me. I would add Halloween, Thanksgiving, fall decor, the color orange (my favorite) everywhere, falling leaves, and plaid.

I think this list is pretty perfect too. Some things I would add:
    Thanksgiving
    Warm Pajamas
    Cuddles on a yucky day
    Smell of cooking for Thanksgiving
    Apple pie, Pumpkin pie, etc.
    Apples
If you have any of these, I missed them on your list.
