Every morning—usually right after the coffee is brewed and before the emails are checked—I make my bed. I’ve done this for years!
Not because I have to, but because this simple 5-minute habit creates a gentle rhythm that sets the tone for my entire day.
There’s science behind it. Psychologists call it a “keystone habit”—one consistent action that creates a ripple effect through the rest of your day. It’s part of what I call the Domino Principle: start with one good choice, and it’s much easier to make the next.

Making the bed is like tipping over the first domino. That one small act often leads to other choices that bring order and calm—tidying the nightstand, putting away laundry, or simply avoiding the temptation to pile clutter on the bed.
I love beginning the day in a gentle rhythm of care—for my home and for myself. Even if plenty of tasks are still waiting, that one completed step gives me an early sense of accomplishment and momentum.

And, of course, there’s the inspiration it brings. I enjoy layering my bed with soft linens, pretty pillows, and quilts that reflect the season. Creating beauty in this small way makes me happy—and seeing a pulled-together, welcoming space throughout the day inspires me to carry that same feeling into the rest of the house.

While making the bed might seem insignificant, it’s never just about the bed.
It’s about how this simple 5-minute morning ritual makes me feel. It’s a small task with a surprisingly big impact.

While buying from Quince is above my budget, I make my bed every morning. My Mother used to be teased by her sisters-in-law that the bed was made before the sheets were cool. I credit her with instilling this habit in me. Starts my day off right.
Same!! franki
100% agree! My Mom taught me and my 5 daughters were raised this way and now my grandchildren are daily making their beds too…it makes so much difference!
Looks beautiful! My bed is made before I leave the room. 🙃
It’s good to get in that habit so it’s just not even something to think about, you just do it!
My son is 53 and when he was a little boy it was a rule. You made your bed in the morning, and if not. You get to not only make your bed at the end of the day… but do the dinner dishes too!!! haha
Believe me, when his feet hit the floor, he turned around and made the bed first thing! It was how I was raised in the 1950s. I am 75 and I still make my bed before I leave my bedroom in the morning.
Brilliant! And good for you on keeping up with making the bed!
My mom always said that if you make your bed, that your room automatically looks a lot better…as a young mom, I didn’t believe that…didn’t feel I had the time or wanted to be bothered, …but now…I’m older and I appreciate making my bed every morning for the exact reasons that you shared….🤗
I use to make my bed when I worked but since retirement I enjoy not making it. 😁
Well I think you definitely earned the chance to decide what makes you happy and works for you in this season! Enjoy!!
Yes, make my bed first thing every day except Fridays when I wash the sheets. Then coffee and quick check of phone, then prayer and Bible study. That’s how my day begins. Love your bedding. Love the whole room.
Thank you so much Christine!
I do make my bed every morning and it makes me feel good when I walk in the bedroom. Thanks for the reminder. It’s a simple task that takes under 5 minutes. Blessings!
Yes love that it’s so doable!
I inherited the same bed making gene. My mother always “aired it out” first, and I do the same, generally 30 to 60 minutes. Studies show that it is much healthier for you.
