Our Coastal Cottage Living Room Makeover

Today I’m excited to share the newest additions to our coastal cottage living room!

When we moved into this home four years ago, it was already furnished—which made it so easy for us to downsize here comfortably and save furniture decisions for a future time.

It’s such a small (but important!) room, we didn’t want to rush to fill it.

Little by little, season by season, we used pieces we had to make it cozy and comfortable while making some changes to the backdrops of the room (including new flooring) and connected spaces (during the kitchen renovation!).

This year, we finally arrived at a much-anticipated chapter: updating our furniture (we chose these beautiful pieces from Pottery Barn and Williams-Sonoma. You will see sources linked throughout this post and a source list at the end!

It’s not our first time investing in pieces from the Williams-Sonoma family of brands (including Pottery Barn), and it won’t be our last!

In fact, we’ve had three favorite living room sofas over the years—across several different homes—and every single one has been from their collections. (The York, the Brooklyn Leather, and another PB sofa I bought secondhand similar to the Buchanan).

They’ve proven to be timeless in style and long lasting quality, and have aged beautifully through daily life and many moves.

The other sofas were passed on to our family when we downsized—including the slipcovered one we gave to my daughter, and the leather now in the Tiny Cottage for my mom!

So it was no surprise to us that when the time came to refresh this space, we returned to what we know and love: first the Williams-Sonoma Home loveseat, and now Pottery Barn chairs and ottomans (two of these in blue classic stripe and this one in chambray performance brushed heathered weave)!

This room is a small pass-through space used similarly to what’s called a Keeping Room! Tucked beside the fireplace near the kitchen and dining nook, it’s the kind of snug spot where you gather for conversation before or after dinner, curl up by the fire, sip morning coffee, or get lost in a good book.

I had specific needs when choosing these pieces—nothing too oversized, but still inviting and cozy.

We also wanted non-toxic fabrics and furniture that could stand up to pets, babies and everyday life.

After much thought and research I landed on a beautiful striped fabric for our darling loveseat and a charming pair of patterned wingback chairs from Pottery Barn.

Their classic shape adds a little drama and height without taking up too much space—plus, I’ve always loved how wingbacks make you feel tucked in, almost cocooned. They are perfect for our needs in this space.

Years ago, I had a similar pair of wingbacks and ottomans that I sold in a move and have regretted it ever since. These feel like a long-awaited return home!

Even though we were starting fresh with furniture, I still wanted the room to feel classic and collected.

I intentionally chose timeless pieces in coordinating (not matching) fabrics, with charming patterns rather than all solids.

Cozy Coastal Cottage Style The Inspired Room

A cozy mix of textures and tones, several versatile ottomans (perfect for propping up feet and flexible extra spots to perch anywhere in the room) plus a durable wool rug (in the bronze color) that grounds the room with a soft pattern—it all came together to create a space that feels warm, personal, and so very livable!

I mixed in some new accessories from Pottery Barn with treasures we’ve collected: an antique bamboo cart from my mom, a marble topped vintage washstand (a favorite Facebook Marketplace find), and art that has a story to tell.

I’m thrilled that we finally have this beautiful new furniture in here! It feels so cozy and welcoming to our family.

We love that this room has come together piece by piece!

My favorite rooms always evolve over time, so of course, we’ll still be making small tweaks and seasonal changes.

I believe that a true sanctuary is never finished. It should be a reflection of the people who live there, so this room will tell the ongoing story of our lives.

I’m excited for all of the ways we can continue to make this space and home our own (and I already have a few more updates to share with you!).

I’ll be sharing more about our furniture and accessory choices and this (ever evolving!) room soon! I’m so grateful to Pottery Barn for partnering with me, gifting some favorite new pieces and accessories!

I love how your home is coming together so beautifully over time! I noticed that you don’t have any end tables (yet?). I’m helping our son decorate his living room—over time ☺️. He has a large sectional with a round upholstered ottoman. I would like to convince him that he needs a couple of “drinks” tables. I don’t like setting my drink on the floor. Do you have plans to add a couple of tiny tables? If yes, I would love to see your options!

Yes, great observation! Small tables important to consider in the space. As always I take my time to make sure I get what I want and need, in such a small space the wrong end table would not work!

I have an idea of what I want, but I also have a couple of small stools and tables that are possibilities so I’ve held onto those to try too. That’ll be my next addition! :)

However this is one reason I got ottomans! They are so flexible. You can add a basket (which I have on the larger ottoman) with a coaster or plate or trays to use them for setting down drinks or a book.

So even if I am without tables for a bit, in the meantime, I can use ottomans!

This room is lovely and so inviting. I love that it has evolved over time. We do not have a Potter Barn close by-I love the wing chairs and I am wondering if they are comfortable?

Thank you so much! Yes it is! A wingback has a high back and wings that can provide extra support for the back, neck, and shoulders. Historically, the shape served to shield you from drafts or direct heat from a fireplace while keeping you warm— which is true today too, they make you feel cozy and supported.

A wingback generally sits up a little taller – the seat is just a tiny smidge higher than my couch. It’s not necessarily the kind of chair you’d buy to curl up in but it’s very comfortable and supportive for sitting, reading, conversation and sipping morning coffee! And if you doze off, your head is tucked in by the wings so it’s comfy! Ha!

This chair is a smaller scale so it fits nicely into more compact spaces —and I’m a more compact size myself ha at 5’2 so I love the scale of this chair. But of course you can find larger sizes if you want a bigger scale chair!

Simply beautiful…so cozy and peaceful. The black demilune table in your foyer caught my eye. We just moved to a new city and a smaller home near our daughter. This table would be perfect for a hallway corner. Can you share a source?

Lovely living room! Eveything goes together so well. I noticed that only one seating spot seems to have a light to read by. Do you have ceiling lighting?

Thank you, yes many details like that can change over time to but right now we have a lamp in every corner so one for every seat plus an extra one for reading. And there overheads all around the adjoining rooms too so it feels cozy and inviting throughout. We may add a couple more wall sconces down the road too.

We actually weren’t going to arrange the room this way but now that we did I could add another reading light if we want one, but I’m not sure it’s necessary.

There’s just two of us and we don’t usually both read in that room.

With that said we love cordless portable reading lights, they are wonderful for getting light to the page so that’s an option too.
