Christmas Tour 2016

Christmas Tour 2016

Hello, sweet friends. Merry Christmas! Come in. I’m so glad you stopped by for our Christmas Tour 2016. We’ve lived in Seattle for just over a year now and we sure LOVE it here! Welcome to our home.

Watch our video above in HD or click over to YouTube for full screen!

I’m excited to be a part of this holiday blog tour hosted by the wonderful Lindsay of The White Buffalo Styling Co. If you are here after visiting Shauna of The House of Silver Lining, welcome! Aren’t those ladies and their homes lovely?

Christmas Tour 2016

I love going on Christmas house tours. But if you ever look at homes on tours and feel like your own house isn’t nearly as festive or finished, you are in good company here. My whole house isn’t pulled together, either. :) In fact, I nearly didn’t get this one room ready in time for the tour! Our house has been quite “out of sorts” since the fall house tour. The kitchen has been under construction for months now (but we are about two weeks away from completion!) and we are finally installing new flooring downstairs and the two new exterior doors over the next couple weeks.

It’s been exciting, but a little messy. :)

Lumber and other supplies have been spread out all over my house and everything has been displaced. I had hoped our remodeling projects would have been completed by this tour, but at least there’s a good chance of completion before Christmas. :) Just a few days ago I seriously felt like my house was way too dusty and chaotic everywhere to even decorate for Christmas.

Christmas Tour 2016

In what can only be explained as a Christmas miracle, last week I went on a big frenzy and dusted, cleaned up and put up some decorations in our living room and even HALF of our dining room (totally an overachiever, right?!) for Christmas.

Three days ago as I was tossing clutter from the room and literally down on my hands and knees wiping construction dust off the floor before taking the photos, my contractor looked at me funny and asked me if I was having company. There had been dust and chaos everywhere for over two months and then suddenly there I was setting up Christmas decor amongst the mess. And what probably appeared even more random, my girls and I were going around snapping photos. Bless his heart, he started picking up tiles and wood trim from the floor in the dining room to help tidy things up in case I was having a pre-party meltdown and his stuff was in my way.

It was a close call, but I finished in the nick of time to participate in this tour {HIGH FIVES!}.

Christmas Tour 2016

So while I can’t offer up a ten part tour of my whole house fully decked out for Christmas this year, I’m relieved to have one and a half clean and tidied rooms to show you today. Don’t get me wrong, I really love the idea of each room in my house and every door and window being all festive for Christmas. I might even get more Christmas decorating done and share it in the coming weeks, but I may not.

What you see here of my Christmas house today is it. It’s all I’ve got. So I hope you don’t mind if we just hang out here :).

The feel of our home overall has been evolving in the year since we moved in and especially over the past few months. It has been fun to make this new place feel more like home. Besides the new kitchen, we’ve been slowly getting settled in by painting walls, arranging furniture and just trying to get the right vibe going for this house.

Christmas Tour 2016

One of our favorite things about this house is that the living room, dining room and kitchen have windows that face the rear of the house with a light and bright view of the Puget Sound, mountains and sky outside. A neutral color palette and simplified look with layers of comfy texture help this room feel oh-so-cozy for winter. It’s actually supposed to SNOW here today, so I’m extra thrilled to have one cozy spot (UPDATE: I added a picture above so you can see the snow in the yard!).

I love this little wire basket of evergreen clippings, pinecones and silver Christmas decorations.

You can see a very small peek of the in-construction kitchen through the arch in the dining room. It won’t be blue for long, that’s just primer :). I am SO excited about the kitchen, I cannot wait to show you. :)

You might have noticed that we switched out our rug in the living room for a larger and more neutral one for the winter. I’ll be sharing more about the rug later in the week, but we really love how quiet and cozy it makes the room look and feel!

I made these DIY snow globe jars years ago (I put them in my book, too!).

I never take them apart so I can just bring them out every year to enjoy.

Coastal touches reflect special family memories and fit well with our view of the sound.
We decorated this little tree with some sweet little glass whales, sailboats and other decorations.

Christmas Tour 2016

The dining room has been in shambles for awhile since it connects to the kitchen.
It was fun to clear it off and wipe off the table to set out a simple glass cloche with snow and a quirky reindeer.

Christmas Tour 2016

I’m so glad I was able to get this one area of my home pulled together. You’ve heard me say this before, but I’ll say it again. If you are feeling stressed by the state or current condition of your own home, just start by setting up one cleaner and more festive corner. Find ways to savor it. Look at the pretty lights, Smell the seasonal scents. Take a deep breath and be present in that room. I’ve been reminding myself to get out of the chaotic rooms and sit in our living room as much as possible. It makes me feel so much more peaceful!

It’s not about how much we do. It’s not about how perfectly we do it.
What matters most is that we savor the season and find joy in counting our blessings.

Melissa, you did inspire me today!
I love the simplicity of all it. I had a rather rough week last week. I moved my mother to my town a year ago this month after the passing of my step dad. It has been a period of adjustment for both of us in too many ways to count. I think both of us had a little meltdown last week and I feel so behind with my decorating, but we are both back up and ready to have a better week. I have been in the remodeling phase as well many times. The dust will drive you crazy, but the finish is always worth it.
I just love your new home and my favorite place maybe that big window that the dogs love. They are adorable on that little daybed.

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Thank you, Sandy! I’m so sad to hear that you had a rough week (and year!) but I’m glad you are back up and ready for a better one. You hang in there and enjoy the rest of the week, do something special for yourself. The dogs love that daybed as much as we do, in fact, I’m sure think we splurged on a fancy rattan dog bed just for them. HA!

  2. Cassie Bustamante

your home is so cozy and warm and gorgeous! i always love your tours! and lily and jack are adorable!!!!

  3. Jody

I am feeling out of gas with the holidays around the corner. Your home makes me realize that even a few small touches in the main room of our house is enough. Thank you. I love it all. The video of the dogs on the daybed is precious.

  4. Jan

Your house looks wonderful for part of it being in a construction zone. I really enjoy your style! I give you a ton of credit for cleaning up the construction dust. I’m also in the midst of a construction project (gutting and enlarging a bathroom, new windows, doors, trim and flooring throughout the main floor, paint), and I’ve given up on cleaning until it is finally over. Just like you, I hope it will be finished within the next two weeks. I can’t wait to see the “reveal” of your new kitchen.

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

YAY! Isn’t it nice to know it will be done before Christmas? I’m still holding my breath on that one, but I’m hopeful. I only cleaned up enough for the photos and it actually did me a world of good to remember I won’t always live under a cloud of dust. Ha! But of course, the dust is all back today. Thank you, Jan!

  5. Maria Newell

Your home looks so Warm and Cozy Melissa! You made it look like a Winter Wonderland! I love all the knitted pillows you chose and that chunky gray area rug looks great! I was actually eyeing the same rug on Wayfair a couple of weeks ago. I was looking for a 4X6 and a Runner for my living room, but decided to go in a different direction. I was afraid that the rug would get pulled from my pets. Your brave! I’m glad you were able to make it for your group Home Tour. Again, so many beautiful and unique displays! And I love the sign over the fireplace! It brings your whole room together. Your video gave me goose bumps! What a great way to start my week and get into the Christmas spirit! Thank you! :)

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and the tour, Maria. Thank you so much for your sweet comment. I was a little nervous ordering the rug, but it is even more wonderful in person than I expected. I think I’ll be happy with it and the quality is great, but yes, who knows what could happen with pets! Have a great week.

  6. Linda Stoll

Dear Melissa … your video was charming, delightful … and motivating!

Advent joys to you, to yours …

  7. Sallie

So beautiful! What a great job you’ve done making festive order out of construction chaos! It looks so inviting, and I love your neutral colors! Great work!! Enjoy this joyful season!!

  8. Cathy

Thank you for all of your hard work to share your beautifully decorated living room with us. I hope you get to enjoy it for awhile, too! I love the Christmas tree-in-upside-down-mason-jar snow globe!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

:) I fully intend to spend much time relaxing in this room now. Thank you, Cathy! It was a fun push to get ready to enjoy this season, I appreciate you coming by to see it!

  9. Cindi

Honestly your Christmas home is my favorite!

  10. Shauna

I can’t believe you pulled this off with all the construction going on in your home Melissa! You amaze me! I want to come curl up on that sofa in front of that window over looking the view and enjoy some hot cocoa with you, friend. I love the video at the end…perfect wrap up to a beautiful tour. So excited to see your new kitchen soon! Merry Christmas sweet friend!
    xo

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Thank you, Shauna! Knowing you all were coming over today :) really helped me to focus in on one space and just get it done enough to enjoy it. I’m so glad I was able to be a part of the tour with you. XOXO

  11. Melinda Young

Your home looks cozy and inviting. I especially love your doggies. They look adorable. Do they stay out of the decorations? Didn’t one get into garland one year? They look like they could be waiting for when you’re not looking. :)

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Ha, yes, they DO get into the decorations. Especially the woodland animal ones which we will put on a tree downstairs once our floors are done. They consider animal decorations fair game. :) Thank you, Melinda!

  12. Becky

I love your dogs so much! The room is so pretty. Great job making it cozy, relaxing and beautiful. Looking forward to your next kitchen update.

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Thanks, Becky! :) It’s so fun to be at this point finally, I appreciate you stopping by today.

  13. Vee

Not a speck of dust! Everything looks festive, beautiful, and definitely inspiring. Thank you for being willing to share even in the midst of construction. That’s devotion! A Merry Christmas to you…

  14. Mallory Fitzsimmonswww

Absolutely gorgeous! Love love all of the natural elements and that pale rose pink used throughout! xoxo

  15. Mary

I’m currently redoing my family room and finding the perfect sofa is proving to be challenging. I love your leather sofa in your photo but every time I sit in one in a shop, I feel like I am sliding out of it. Do you recommend leather over fabric for day to day comfort and use? Btw, I am enjoying your decorating journey in your new home!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Hi Mary! I have grown to really love the leather. It’s particularly soft leather, so that helps. It’s a little more slick than fabric, but not in a problematic way. I love the look of it, but I also think it feels comfortable to sit on. Mostly we bought it because I was sick of my dogs getting our slipcovers dirty :). But it has turned out to be a nice comfy spot to sit for humans, too. We love it and I definitely recommend it. It just gets better with age, which isn’t as true with upholstery. :)

  16. sandyc

Thanks so much, Melissa, for the video tube along with your wonderful pics. Went a long way, though not completely, toward making my virtual cup of coffee with you in your wonderful living room seem real. My house doesn’t get this decorated – 3 feline furballs don’t permit – but I’m looking at the precious standing metal Christmas cat I just found and an absolutely gorgeous crystal-looking angel candle holder which my neighbors gave me for taking care of their kitty a couple of weeks ago and I’m inspired. In addition, my neighbor also offered to decorate my mailbox for the contest we have every year at our HOA – a real treat because she is so great at it all as you are. My mailbox with its dropbox looks like a giant red puffy Christmas package just begging to be opened. Thanks to them and to you for getting me in the Christmas spirit and for all you share. Merry, merry Christmas.

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Merry Christmas to you, Sandy. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and photos today. It would be lovely to have you all IN the house, but at least I have this one way to make it ALMOST feel like you’ve been here. Thank you for your kindness in coming by and your comments.

  17. Angie

Beautiful! And inspiring! Thank you for sharing your creative ideas.

  18. Gail W.

Melissa, I only subscribe to two blogs ( both home decor, big surprise!) and after visiting the other blogs you mentioned, and some others that they also suggested, I know why I only subscribe to yours and the other one! I LOVE that yours doesn’t have REALLY ANNOYING ads everywhere and I just love your style of decor, and writing ! KUDOS to YOU, all around !!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Hi Gail, I’m so glad you enjoy your experience here. I do try to create a place that isn’t annoying if I can help it :). Thank you so much for your encouragement and for making this place a priority visit! I’m so honored to be one of two blogs you subscribe to.

  19. Diane @ An Extraordinary Day

Wow! You did a great job, Melissa, in spite of all the chaos you’re living with. And your contractor sounds like a gem! Everything looks so peaceful… what a contrast to the rest of your house right now. It must feel absolutely amazing. I’m so sorry for the sink catastrophe. Isn’t there always something. When I look back to when we had our house built… ’82 as almost newly weds… it was a Good Housekeeping Merry Christmas house… and things were pretty simple back then. Except that I painted the whole house… stained or painted all the trim… and stained and finished all the pine floors in the whole house myself. Yikes! Was I Wonder Woman?!! The electrician made mistakes… the plumber too… even some of our thumb latch doors got put on backwards… but really… it didn’t matter in the end and those things just became the little quirks of our beautiful and loved home. I remember our first Christmas there… just a month after moving in…. it was the best. I’m so excited for you. And how fun to have your daughters working with you, too. You are blessed my friend!!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

What a treat to have you visit, Diane! Thank you. Oh yes, I love your perspective on those little quirks that make a house a home. Thank you again for your kindness and encouragement. I’m so grateful to have blogging friends like you!

  20. Jo Jo

Melissa, your living room & dining room look fabulous! So pretty and elegantly Christmas! Kudos to you for doing it all in the midst of chaos, but you can feel the live that was put into it for your family and your blog friends here. Love the pups! So precious! The video was sweet! Merry Christmas to you & yours, Melissa. May His peace be with you thru out the new year! ?❤️

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

We enjoy creating a home where our family feels safe and loved and where my blogging friends can enjoy their visits! It’s a honor. I feel so blessed to have such kind friends here today and appreciate that you took the time to stop in, watch the video and leave a thoughtful comment, Jo Jo! I appreciate you, friend!

  21. Anita Baxter

    Hello Melissa,

I thank you for your blog and for sharing your wonderful photos of your house and your precious Lily and Jack. You have done an outstanding job in decorating for the Holidays and especially while construction/remodeling are going on. You really inspire me, all of us to put forth the effort in creating a home that we love and cherish. I am so glad that I stumbled upon your blog a few years ago and I have all of your books (have reread them all twice). Love the different Christmas ideas that I get from you. Continue on my Inspired Sister, for we love what you do :)

  22. Jessica Bruno

Beautiful Melissa but those dogs are my fav!!!! LOVE!

  23. Andi

Looks so cozy! I love that the contractor helped you clean up a bit :)

  24. Danielle

I love the glass front cabinet where your thermostat is, with the hanging baskets above. Could you share where it is from? Thank you!

    • Carly

      I’m curious too!

  25. Linda Grubbs

Beautiful!! Love your holiday decor. As usual…you inspire me to get moving! Thank you for that. :)
Can’t wait for more of the kitchen and other updates…especially the DUTCH DOORS!!!! Happy to see the pups! Jack has my heart…but that Lily is too adorable too!! Merry Christmas to you and your gang!
    XOXO

  26. Karen

Lovely!! So fitting for the style of home and region of the country. Just love how peaceful and soft everything is. Can you tell me where you got the navy and white pillow cover on your leather sofa? I love that fabric! Thank you!

  27. Penny

    Thank-you Melissa,

I really enjoyed the video as well as seeing Jack, and Lily, they are so sweet. Your home looks lovely from every angle, and I really enjoyed seeing it all. But my son’s favorite was your Nutcrackers, since he collects them.
I hope that you, and your family have a very blessed, peaceful Christmas

    Merry Christmas

  28. Ardith

Melissa, you deserve a standing ovation for whipping up some Christmas cheer in your home at this stage of your renovations. You have indeed created some very cozy and lovely holiday areas in which to curl up and enjoy the coming snow. Hopefully all is restful in your gorgeous plum bedroom. Cheers and Happy Holidays, Ardith

  29. Linda from Charlotte, NC

I am just loving your new home. It is so inviting. I love it when you show off your sweet puppies. Don’t they bring such joy? I have a beagle and she makes me smile many times each day. Merry Christmas.

  30. Christi

We are in the process of packing to move from the rent house we are in now. So everything is taken down, pulled out, deconstructed. We do not know where we are going yet; my husband’s job is not very stable. I have a part-time job working for a homeschool cooperative two days a week. I had a stroke nine years ago that left me partially paralyzed with aphasia and PBA so I’m at home more these days. My husband and I are in our early sixties with no retirement. We do not know what the future holds. With these “elements” to deal with each day, I remind myself God is in control, I am dear to Him, and He has a plan for me.He holds the future. Sprinkled throughout my day are a few blogs I visit. I enjoy, get motivated, overwhelmed, impressed, laugh, frustrated, reminded, encouraged and learn so much. Thanks for sharing your home and yourself. It’s all a lovely treasure.

  31. Lynn Wolf

Love the coziness….so warm and inviting. Your pups are always so cute :). I just want to hug them!!
Can’t wait to see the finished kitchen.

  32. Patty

Your decorations are lovely and just perfect in your beautiful home. I love, love, love your fur babies, they are so much fun and you are right the look on Lily’s face is priceless, it is as if she is saying please mom can’t you do something about him haha.
I can’t wait to see your kitchen, what a wonderful Christmas this will be.

  33. Karen on Bainbridge Island

Oh it all looks so pretty and festive. So cozy. I would love to know where you found that tree on which you hung your nautical themed ornaments. It’s very cool looking.

  34. Kathy Cheek

I am glad I decided to scroll through the pictures a second time because the first time, the tree with J O Y on it, I didn’t see the other letters and I thought, why a hook for an ornament, is that supposed to be a fish hook, or one of those hooks they use to drag people off stage? But the second time, I saw the O and the Y. Ah, now I get it!

Everything is beautiful and the video was the perfect finishing touch!

  35. Petra

Hi Melissa from Melbourne! I’m new to your blog and it’s just lovely. Your Christmas decor is gorgeous too! I especially love your trough with the baubles – great idea! Looking forward to more blog posts from you in my inbox :-)

  36. Julie Blanner

It’s all so beautiful, but I especially love that sweet little “JOY” tree and the quote “It is well with my soul.” You are always inspiring, Melissa! Merry Christmas!

  37. Robin

Your home is so cozy and inviting! I am hoping to get a gas fireplace from Santa so I was looking closely at what was lighting up your fireplace – candles and Christmas lights – no heat but it sure looks cute. What is the light socket in your fireplace for? Seems an odd place for one…just curious :). Happy holidays to you and yours.

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Thank you. It’s all set up for a gas fireplace insert and perhaps electric / fan blower? I would love if Santa brought me a gas fireplace, too!

  38. Corinna - ADesignerAtHome

Mind? As if! I wouldn’t mind spending any time in any part of your home. Even the ones under construction. My favorite touch has to be the coastal tree. Those ornaments are dreamy.Same with that lovely Seattle light streaming in from your windows.

  39. Sarah Walker of The Curated House

Lily and Jack are really the mascots for your warm and welcoming home! I love that your holiday decor is approachable and that each room feels decked for Christmas with details that could happily live there all year round.

Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas, Melissa!

    xx Sarah

  40. Richella Parham

Darling Melissa, how glad I am to visit you today! I’ve made a practice over the years of looking at so many houses decorated for Christmas. While I still love it, this year I’m visiting only a few as I practice the discipline of simplicity. The fact that you’re celebrating after getting just 1 1/2 rooms decorated really resonated with my spirit. Way to go, you! Your space looks like YOU and is so welcoming. I’m happy for you and grateful for you. Bless you, sweet friend!

  41. Richella Parham

And I absolutely LOVE the photos of Jack and Lily. I must say their coloring works beautifully with your decor!

  42. KATHYSUE

Merry Christmas Melissa, Your home is always warm and inviting. The large sign says it all. I also would love to know where you found the little house Christmas wrapping paper, Love that!!!

  43. lily

Hi Melissa – Love your festive decorations – Where did you get your tree topper? Would love to find one just like it. Thanks!

  44. Cindy williams

Love everything about your decorating style. I look forward to your new postings every week with delight and anticipation!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Well, thank you so much, Cindy! I’m so happy to know you enjoy the posts as much as I enjoy sharing them!

  45. Lisa Girouard

    Hi there,

I was wondering where you bought the cabinet that is in your hallway? It is sort of rustic and you have the blankets stored in it. This is exactly what I am looking for in a space in my home! Thank you so much in advance for the information. I love your house tours. You always give me great inspiration. Happy Holidays. Looking forward to seeing the kitchen soon!

  46. Jolene

“If you are feeling stressed by the state or current condition of your own home, just start by setting up one cleaner and more festive corner.”

This advice really resonates with me, not only because I need this reminder today, but also because it echoes a lesson learned during those high school summers I worked in the kitchen at church camp. The motherly lady in charge of meals would charge us to ‘make an island of peace’ such as cleaning the industrial size toaster and its surroundings. Before long the ‘islands’ would run together and we’d have the entire kitchen and dining area cleaned.

May you soon enjoy a house full of run-together islands of peace. Merry Christmas!

  47. Emelia

Just found your blog through White Buffalo Styling. I really liked your style and then I saw the picture of your pups and I fell in love. So cute!!

  48. Joanna Dunken

Where did you get the metal bucket that your wood is kept in? (By the fireplace)
p.s. What are your top 10 favorite decorating books? (I already have your 3 so those don’t count!) :)

  49. Debbie - Mountain Mama

Oh, Melissa, your home looks so wonderful – and I can’t WAIT to see the kitchen, how exciting!!! Merry Christmas to you and your lovely family – and give Lily and Jack a big wet sloppy kiss from my Lily and Daisy (also known as the Monkey!)

  50. Raven

Where are the brown leather couches from? I absolutely love them!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Thank you so much! Pottery Barn! There is a link in my shop here :) >> theinspiredroom.net/shop-my-house

  51. Sara

Hi. I love your style and have been eyeing that leather sofa. Is it pottery barn? If so, do you remember the leather that you chose?

    Thanks and happy decorating!
