Before & After: Painted Armoire with Milk Paint

Hi there! It’s Courtney (Melissa’s daughter) here today. Recently on the blog we gave you a tour of the lower level apartment I lived in at my parents’ house for about a year. If you missed the tour, click here to see! I mentioned in that post that I had painted the wood armoire in this room and I wanted to come back around to share more details!

Before & After: Painted Armoire with Milk Paint

This was the armoire before I painted it. My grandma purchased this many years ago–it’s probably more than 40 years old and has held up so well! My parents had it in their bedroom at the old house, and it ended up in this room when we moved to this Seattle house. I used it as a closet when I lived with my family. It was pretty as is, but I love the look of painted antique armoires and couldn’t stop picturing how lovely this would look painted!

I wanted a simple paint option that wouldn’t require a lot of preparation, so I decided to use Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint. I chose the color Marzipan, an off white / almond toned color (you can get it online HERE).

Note: I ended up needing to purchase two of the one quart bags to complete the paint, so if you have a larger piece I’d recommend grabbing two!

This is the same kind of paint we used to paint our bathroom vanity (see that bathroom makeover before and after post here–we used the color Bergere for the blue vanity).

Here’s the after! The power of paint is pretty amazing, isn’t it?

I am so happy with how it turned out and I love how the paint really brought out all the cute details.

Since I was painting the armoire with Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint, I didn’t need to do much prep work. I removed the hardware and gave it a quick dusting, but I didn’t even sand it! If you’re painting a super glossy piece, I would recommend sanding at least a bit, or mixing in a Miss Mustard Seed bonding agent with the paint. We used the bonding agent when painting our bathroom vanity. But for the armoire, the paint stuck just fine without sanding or the bonding agent.

I did multiple coats to get the coverage I wanted. This paint is very forgiving, so don’t worry if you’re not a DIY professional! I think anyone can do this and have a great result.

I also swapped out the hardware for these very inexpensive glass knobs on Amazon.

Let’s take one more look at the before and after, shall we?
