I enjoyed this Sarah Richardson video and thought you all might too! It is fun to see creative and unexpected ways to use various wall paint colors and shades of color in a room or open concept home. And she gives some helpful tips on where to start!

I am having a lot of creative fun varying my own paint colors from room to room and even using several different paint colors in one room. While my house has distinct rooms and isn’t really an open concept home, the main rooms of the house do open to each other without doors.

My open kitchen family room actually has FOUR wall and ceiling paint colors plus the kitchen cabinet colors, so five layers of paint colors. And then you can see a sixth if you look through the opening to the dining room.

You can see a little peek at one of the ways I have divided colors in my family room in the picture above. I will have a post on that soon too since I haven’t really talked about those particular updates in my family room yet.

I know in this “paint everything including the walls all white” day and age using multiple colors is a little risky and maybe unexpected, but thank goodness the amazing Sarah Richardson and I agree, layering colors is fun! If I’m crazy then at least I’m in respectable company, right?

PS. I promise to get my new paint color post created for my house and post it very soon. I get emails every day almost asking for that paint colors post, so I WILL do it. I just want to make sure I get all the colors right and have good pictures to show you which colors go where, since there are several variations throughout my house.

Honestly, I’m kinda famous for giving out the wrong color name since by the time I paint I have tested so many options, changed shades and my mind so often that I confuse even myself. Hehehe. Scatter brained much? Yep! I do want to get it right for my paint color post though so I won’t mislead you!

Enjoy the video!

Have you experimented with layering paint colors in a room?

I love the paint colors around your mantle. And that’s a really neat book and globe display. Is that a Replogle globe? I like the metal holder thingie on it. Classy and not overwhelming. I had a Replogle but the holder wasn’t as nice and then the equator fell clear off, so I can’t really display it anymore. Inspired by your mantle, I just ordered a small version globe for my living room bookcase. Since we homeschool there is no excuse for NOT having a globe out!! Well, except maybe that excuse about the equator….loved the video!

Love this! Can’t wait to watch all the webisodes! I’m also crazy about your mantle! My husband apprenticed under Steve Tiek and I assist Caitlin Creer, who did the mantle in the Spring Lane home! Yours is beautiful!

Great post! So comforting to hear an expert say it’s OK to do this! I ended up painting my whole house the same color, with different values, just because I was not sure how different colors would look! Time to go paint shopping!

    Melissa,

Thank you for sharing. Your posts are so informative and fun.

Our new house sounds a bit like yours with the main rooms opening onto each other. We used 9 different colors through out so they all had to visually flow.

Thank you for reminding me about posting. Hehe.

I love colors, but sometimes am not brave enough to use them. I enjoy the inspiration of others, they give me courage.

I am a big Sarah fan too and have been following her since her first show on Hgtv Canada… Love her use of colour in spaces, especially in some of her more cottage style rooms! Love your mantle too – globes are such a great feature in a room! Beautiful paneling on your mantel.

So I’m reading down the post and I come to the bedroom in the last photo and I think to myself….Oh look what Melissa did in a bedroom. Nice!!!!! And then I scroll down and see that it’s Sarah’s room. Okay….are you and Sarah channeling? Cause I’m thinking this could be you. Yes???
Thanks for the color thoughts. I do like color. But…I also have figured out that things photograph better in a neutral/white room with neutral/white furnishings. Do you think that is one reason that so many bloggers have gone that direction? It’s like a disappearing backdrop for all the lovelies in a room to stand out. Yes?

Yes, so true, an all white room with well chosen accessories looks amazing and crisp in a photo. But I choose to decorate for how I like to live, real life, even though a photo is pretty :-). My last house had all white walls for the most part and it worked because I loved the plaster walls to be pure and the house still felt charming. But white drywall in a new house doesn’t feel the same so for me, and how my house feels when I’m in it trumps how it looks in a photo. So that’s how I roll!

And if I had half the brilliance of Sarah I’d be a happy girl! Thanks for the compliment on the room confusion :-)!
