Our Teen Boy's Room

Inspiration for a Modern Boy’s Room

When we lived in our old house and I had just started this blog, my son Luke had just turned seven. He was so little back then, I can’t believe how much he has grown and changed over the years.

Our Teen Boy's Room

If you were a reader from the beginning you might remember him as the one in the infamous messy hall “giraffe” post six years ago– the little tyke wearing undies on his head.

Our Teen Boy's Room

But, he’s no longer seven years old.

He still has the same handsome face and curly head of hair, but now he’s taller than his sisters and mom.

Our Teen Boy's Room

He’s thirteen now.

But, in a happy turn of events, he no longer wears undies on his head.

Our Teen Boy's Room

In his room in this house, he had to put up with the swine (fleshy pink) color for years. Bless his heart.

We finally painted his walls a year or two ago, but it didn’t end up being a color he liked and never really came back to working on his room. Mom fail. I didn’t even take any pictures, at least any I can find. It just wasn’t worth talking about.

Our Teen Boy's Room

He had bunk beds that he had slept in for years at the beach house. They were great for sleepovers, more floor space and fun when he was younger, but mostly now that he’s taller they just weren’t that comfortable for him.

He had a tiny little desk and an old dresser leftover from one of his sisters. It wasn’t really HIS room.

So ever since he turned 13, I’ve been wanting to do something special for him.  I wanted to give him a room that would be more reflective of who he is. A room he would enjoy, feel comfortable in, and remember from his teen years.

His room is TEENY so we didn’t have much space to work with, but his main requests were for a full sized bed and a desk.

You can see our inspiration collage for the room, above! We’ve been working on the room and can’t wait to show you the progress.

Disclosure: *Luke’s new bed (as shown in above collage) was provided to us by Overstock.com as a part of a room makeover challenge. We were not compensated in any other way and as always, our room designs and opinions are our own.

Next week I’ll have pics up of the room so far, so you can see the progress we’ve made!

He may be grumpy this afternoon when he gets home from school- after several girls tell him that his mom posted a pic of him w underwear on his head. But then again- he may be grateful bc so many girls talked to him today (they don’t seem to mind the topic, as long as there is interaction w the girls, I’ve noticed!) my teen boy is 14.
Can’t wait to see the room!

I think the inspiration board looks great and I’m sure he’s going to love his room makeover.

    Can’t wait to see it.

Ha, yes, good memories haha. We are having fun with his room, and he’s just thrilled to be getting a bigger bed and a desk his size :-).

Ahh yes…the underwear over the head days. I recently took down my son’s puppy wallpaper border (horrors) and painted – what a difference! Look forward to seeing your progress :)

Love your inspiration board! I redid my son’s room last year when he turned 13 with much the same requirements! Small room, full size bed . . . So we made him a corner headboard he’s still loving. Can’t wait to see how your son’s room looks!

Well, shoot, now this mama of two sons is all nostalgic. They were crammed into ONE room that I always longed to decorate. They ended up filling it themselves with 5 guitars. 2 basses, drum set, recording equipment, desks, etc., etc. I can’t wait to see Luke’s room as a result of your amazing ability at organization and decoration! Lucky boy :) Time flies, you know.

I’m looking forward to seeing the finished project as we will be in your shoes before we know it. We’ve got two boys, 8 and almost 10. Both have teeny rooms and twin beds, but will most likely be needing full-sized beds before we know it. They still have so many little-r boys toy,
Legos and such, that it’s hard to keep it looking inviting. I keep telling myself we’ll get to a point when they won’t have all the toys and little stuff all over the place. *sigh* I want their rooms to be a nice place they enjoy being in and want them to be proud of their space.

Awww, your son is asorable. My oldest just turned ten and I think next year we’ll redo his room. It was the pirate room turned superhero room but he’s not into either now. I look forward to seeing what you’re doing!

So funny! I have almost the same photo of my son with a pair of undies on his head. Must be a boy thing i guess.

Somehow they maybe assume undies double as a Spiderman mask. I have no idea what made him think of that, but it must be a boy thing! HA!

I can’t wait to see the results. My three boys, ages 10, 12 & 13 are sharing a room right now and I’ve been working on giving them a “more mature” room for what seems like a lifetime. None of them showed any interest in picking out bedding, furniture, etc… and you think that would make things easier but it hasn’t. Hope to have it done by Christmas. Fingers crossed.

My son didn’t show much interest in picking specific stuff out either. Other than saying he wanted a bigger bed and desk. We’ve had to pick out what we THINK he would like and show him stuff but sometimes he doesn’t really say either way. But I’m sure it is hard to visualize the whole room as a teen boy, so we just move ahead as long as he isn’t giving a definite no :-).

When our third was born, I moved our son and our daughter into a shared room. Baby is almost two, so we’ve been talking about moving the two girls in together so that our son can have his own room back. His 8th birthday is in January, so I think I’ll have him stay the night at my sister’s and then do a mad rush to makeover Baby’s room as a birthday surprise for him. Short story long, I’ve been looking online for inspiration and I love your board you put together. I’m anxious to see it all put together!

What is it with the underwear on the head and boys? On a road trip we turned around to check on our older son who was 4 or 5 at the time and he had taken off his pants and put his underwear on his head. My youngest son is 5 and did the same thing recently. His room is going to look great. I can’t wait to see it!

Ooooo can’t wait to see what you do with a teeny room. My place is small too and I’d love to see practically what can be done with them.
