I often get emails from readers asking for advice on choosing color schemes for their home. There isn’t always a right or wrong answer to the questions, because there are so many options and different ways to create a beautiful color scheme. Bravely mixing and matching beautiful paint colors into fresh palettes can offer you plenty of inspiration to express your own unique style at home.

There are endless combinations of paint colors that will add personality to your home. With adjoining rooms you have the chance to add a creative surprise with a different or unexpected color, or you can use similar shades of colors (or even the same color!) from room to room.

In my house, I often use subtle color changes but every once in awhile I like to add a few dramatic colors (such as the more vibrant blue color of my office) to mix things up. I actually make a little game out of trying out various paint color palettes with all the sample cards at The Home Depot every time I am shopping for painting supplies!

The Home Depot has put out a pretty color palette for fall as seen in the above dining room. My girls and I couldn’t help but think about all the different combinations and ways the colors could be featured throughout the home! The colors are unexpected together with dark mustard walls, a blue-green ceiling and the adjoining grey room with a fun punch of coral French doors. The white trim ties it all together and keeps it feeling bright! Here are the colors used in this dining room:

  • Door: Glidden Premium® Terra Cotta Rose, GLR31
  • Trim: Glidden Premium® Muslin White, GLC24
  • Wall: BEHR Premium Plus Ultra® Madagascar, UL1803
Ceiling: Behr Ultra Premium® Zen UL220-14

All of these paint colors are available exclusively at The Home Depot®.

How you would you switch up this room using the same color palette?

I love the Home Depot and the variety of colors they have to choose from! My daughters rooms are very vibrant, yet my whole house is very neutral.

What is the name of the ceiling color because it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for in my dining room?

I don’t really care for the new palette. The mustard walls may work with the coral, but not with the blue green and the gray. The chocolate chairs around the table introduce another disparate element. For me there is no cohesiveness–just completely different colors jumbled together. I have colored walls in my house, and not all the same, so I understand about introducing a different element. But the new element should relate in some way to something in the adjacent room, or it looks like a hodge-podge. IMO, of course.

What do you do when you have an open floor plan and you’d like to paint the connecting rooms different colors? We have absolutely no trim around the archways and windows. Where should one color stop and the next start?

That ceiling color! It’ll be PERFECT for my MBR re-do. Seriously – I’m thrilled to have stumbled on this idea. It’s just what I need. I might have to add a splash of coral to the palette. THANK YOU.

I’m loving the wall color! And the chandelier! — is that from Home Depot, too? Any idea what it’s called?
